Fed up with social media, but love conversation? Always ranting at the Six O’Clock News or arguing with the radio? Then The Forum at Maidenhead Synagogue is the perfect place for you to let off steam.

Held every couple of months on a Sunday morning at the shul, the group meet to discuss topical issues. No pre-booking is required  – just turn up –  and John Dunston, fellow of Harris Manchester College at Oxford chairs the discussions beautifully, inspiring exploration and debate, all with a Jewish perspective. Recent themes have included events in Ukraine, the repeal of Roe v Wade, and David Baddiel’s book, ‘Jews Don’t Count’.

Around the circle are voices that reflect Maidenhead’s uniquely wide-ranging membership, and include members from Europe, the US, and of mixed cultural backgrounds. Conversation is lively, often sparky, and  always friendly. Sophie, long-standing member of the Synagogue and mother of three boys, explains why the sessions are important dates in her diary:

“As a busy parent, it has been a valuable opportunity for me to reconnect with the wider community. In the times that we live in, it’s also a relief to keep the spirit of intellectual freedom – surely one of Judaism’s greatest gifts to the world – alive and well.”

The sessions are two hours long with a break at half time for tea and pastries from the cafe on site. The debates are often so animated and interesting that the chatter carries on over the coffee break with only pauses for chewing!
