What happens at a Torah Breakfast? Libby and Francis, two members of Maidenhead Synagogue share their experience of these monthly events and what it means to them.

The couple from Salisbury joined the Synagogue in the autumn of 2021. Libby is an academic at the University of Reading, and Francis is a retired Religious Studies teacher.

How long have you been going to the Torah Breakfasts?

Since January ’22. We try to go in person, and really value the interaction and discussion around the table. When we can’t get there, it’s great to be able Zoom in and contribute online.

When are the Breakfasts exactly?

The sessions run on the first Saturday of every month. They take place before the morning Shabbat Service.

Who takes the sessions?

We all do.  Or rather, every month one of us leads the session.  During the session we go through the ‘Parasha’ (Torah reading for the week) line by line.  The leader starts it off by asking a question – such as ‘why does the text say this’ or ‘what does this word mean to us?’ and everyone pitches in – introducing points from their past studies, personal experience, values and feelings.  We’re lucky to have Shel, a very knowledgeable member of the community, and the Rabbi to sprinkle the conversation with their learning.

What made you go in the first place?

A desire to engage with the content of the Torah readings that we read each week and to find a community of others engaged with Judaism and its values.

What are the three main benefits you’ve felt from going?

1. Astonishment at the way these ancient texts can draw such deep and relevant reflections on our own lives and society.

2. Delight at the wonderfully different, traditional and original insights everyone brings.

3. The freedom to ask basic, challenging or ‘silly’ questions without feeling in the least bit judged or embarrassed!

What would you say to anyone thinking of going?

Give it a try! Just turn up and see how it goes. We have copies of the text and commentary there. It’s not essential but if you want to, you could prepare a little beforehand by reading the text and perhaps even looking at a site online, for example try here.

What type of person would enjoy it?

Anyone interested in sharing ideas and seeing the text come alive!

Is there anything else you’d like to add about the Torah Breakfast?

It’s not an actual, eating breakfast, so… if you don’t think you can make it through to the Kiddush, bring a snack.

Special thanks to Libby and Francis for their contribution to this article. To share your own experience at one of Maidenhead Synagogue’s activities on this website, please contact the Site Editor here.
