Maidenhead Synagogue's Holocaust Memorial

After ten years in the planning, Maidenhead Synagogue now has a Holocaust Memorial. At present, it is an online memorial at holocaustmemorial.maidenheadsynagogue.org.uk. It provides personal testimony of families and friends of members of the synagogue, and it gives a succinct overview of what the Holocaust was.

The Memorial has two primary purposes:

  1. It is a collective space for members of the synagogue and their families to remember loved ones who have suffered, and who continue to suffer from the Holocaust, and

  2. It provides background and direct, personal testimony to the horrors of the Holocaust as the basis for evaluation and discussion about modern society.

Almost everyone who has had any exposure to the reality of the Holocaust understands the call of "Never Again". Yet humans continue to rain atrocities on each other. Our hope is to influence the people who see our Memorial to re-evaluate and change for the better their attitudes and behaviours towards others. It is very easy to sit back and despair at humanity, yet it is just as easy to influence those around us. And if those around us influence those around them and so on, it may end up making a difference to the communities we live in.

We offer our thanks to all the families and people who have helped to bring this Memorial to life.
